Study Abroad Program Description

The program price includes tuition for one online course (3 semester credits). If you are interested in enrolling in more than one online course in San José OR with one of our other Remote Learning programs in Florence or Seville, please speak with the ISA Costa Rica Program Manager. Each additional course in San José will cost $1000, while this cost will vary at the other locations. Additional courses are not possible in the intensive month sessions.

This Global Studies in Costa Rica & Spanish Language program is a flexible, remote learning opportunity with online courses in humanities, business, environmental science, social sciences, health and Spanish. This virtual experience will enhance your knowledge of Costa Rica and Latin America. A number of courses on this program have a fieldwork component, which can be completed through a short hands-on learning experience in Costa Rica at the end of the program. The fieldwork component is optional and does require a supplemental fee which will be fully refunded if global events prohibit travel. To learn more about this fieldwork component, please reach out to your ISA San José Program Manager.

COURSE SELECTION
The program price includes tuition for one course (3 semester credits). If you are interested in enrolling in more than one course, please speak with the ISA Costa Rica Program Manager about additional fees.

The courses below are all offered online. Those with an optional fieldwork component (to be conducted in Costa Rica, at the end of the program, for an additional fee) are noted.  If you are unable to travel to Costa Rica to complete the fieldwork component the course will be 3 credits, instead of 4 credits. In addition, if you sign up for multiple courses with a fieldwork component, the schedule of these trips may mean that you can only participate in one.

Please note that ISA cannot guarantee course placement and availability. For this reason, we ask all students to consider alternate courses in the event that their preferred courses are not available.

LANGUAGE LEVEL PLACEMENT
All students enrolling in a language course above the Beginner level must take a Spanish language placement exam prior to departure. The exam will indicate each student's language proficiency level and determine the courses in which the student is eligible to enroll.

COURSE LEVEL RECOMMENDATIONS
ISA offers course level recommendations for the courses listed below. Please note that the course level recommendations are based on the host university's input, but are not necessarily representative of course levels at your home university. These ISA recommendations are intended to facilitate the determination of course equivalencies by advisers and credential evaluators at participants' U.S. home institutions. At Veritas University, course codes are composed of two parts: an alpha code indicating the discipline or field of study and a numeric code that indicates the type of course and level. The first number indicates the level or degree of complexity of ongoing research.

Courses that start with a 1 are introductory courses or beginner-level language courses.

Courses that start with a 2 are courses that require more hours of independent study and are intermediate-level language courses.

Courses that start with a 3 are courses that require research and presentations and are advanced-level language courses.

Courses that start with a 4 have a very similar level to level 3 courses, but usually are "specialty areas" within a discipline.

SYLLABI
