Overview
Synopsis:This unit is a foundational Arts unit examining the basic elements and concepts relevant to the Visual and Media arts in particular. The unit provides opportunities for practical exploration of these art forms, and introduces relevant arts pedagogies that emphasise the role of the arts in society and in the care and education of children from birth to 12.Learning OutcomesTo successfully complete this unit at the Introductory Level you will provide evidence of:Course Learning Outcome A- Know students and how they learn:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities
- Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability.
Course Learning Outcome B- Know content and how to teach it:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area
- Organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence
- Use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to design learning sequences and lesson plans
- Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas
- Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students

ContentThis unit introduces the history and philosophy of early childhood and primary arts education, and the theories and practices which shape arts experiences in communities and educational contexts. The studio work provides the environment and opportunities to develop skills and knowledge about art as language and the contexts in which art is shared and enjoyed, with a particular focus on Visual and Media Arts. Both are studied as discrete strands, but the benefits of approaches that integrate the two are explored theoretically and practically. Current curriculum documents are examined to assist planning, implementing and evaluating quality arts experiences, and the role of the teacher in high quality early childhood and primary school arts programs is debated.Approaches to Teaching and LearningThis unit engages you in your learning through practical studio sessions that are based on problem based learning approaches involving your active participation in the Visual and Media Arts. This unit adopts a blended learning approach which includes online podcasts, studio workshops, and various online interactive teaching resources which provide opportunities for you to engage collaboratively with peers and tutors. Your learning will be enhanced by weekly reading as specified in the unit material. Both assessment tasks are designed as learning experiences, and will help build your personal and professional knowledge and skills in designing quality arts programs for children. First year experience principles will be applied as appropriate.AssessmentAssessment name: Reflective JournalDescription: This task is an annotated folio of drawings including a reflective evaluation of students' Visual Arts learning through a personalised account of daily drawing over time. Students will be provided with a framework to help them consider how a task such as this supports the learning needs of students across the full range of drawing abilities, and how drawing underpins knowledge and understanding in the Visual Arts. The task also provides opportunities for students to consider drawing as meaning-making, and the importance of multiliteracies in early childhood and primary Arts education.Relates to objectives: Course Learning Outcome A, Course Learning Outcome BWeight: 50Internal or external: BothGroup or individual: IndividualDue date: Early-SemesterAssessment name: Recorded Creative WorkDescription: This task is a digital media production combining images, sound and digital text that expresses a perspective on the role of Visual and Media Arts in children's learning. The production might take the form of a short film, animation, remix or digital story.
