To successfully complete this unit at the Developmental Level you will provide evidence of:

The unit is structured around two modules that promote ethically and legally sound, socially-just perspectives. The unit shows how a range of social, cultural, political and economic tensions impact on schools and your teaching practices. The first module covers topics such as Social Governance, ethics, teaching and the law. The second module examines topics such as Anti-Discrimination, Child Protection, Educational Policy Initiatives and the targeting of Low SES schooling communities.

The reflexive links between theoretical knowledge and Work Integrated Learning experiences is a critical component to the unit for it engages you in your learning through a theory-to-practice approach. This unit gives you the opportunity to reflect and apply lecture content during tutorials, 2 days equivalent of school site visits and 2 separate weeks of Field Experience. Both content and organisation is designed for you to assess your progress in the unit and the course and for you to gather evidence of meeting unit and course outcomes.

Methods of presentation:

The unit adopts a format that utilises a one (1) hour lecture and two (2) hour tutorial where you will engage in collaborative activity with peers and tutors. During your field experience you will be assigned to the supervision of a teacher in a school and supported in making and demonstrating links between the content covered and real world learning experiences.

Assessment name: Presentation

Description: The group assessment task involves critically enquiring into a particular educational topic and will involve an analysis and discussion of relevant materials covered in the unit. This task takes the form of a group seminar that will last approximately 50-60 minutes and must contain the following: General analysis of the topic, based on material covered in lecture and the associated readings/chapter in the text; Specific analysis, in relation to the key ideas and concepts and use of appropriate socio-cultural research and literature (in short a demonstrated theoretical understanding of topic and its relationship to education); Review and or integration into the presentation of the associated CMD reading/s and demonstrated links to further/suggested reading/s; Use of practical examples/discussion/links in connection to the topic and educational settings experienced during Site Visits and Field Experience; Summary/conclusion; Provision for question time; A one-page handout supplied to the class that is structured in a way that can be used for review during the final tutorial. Assessment name: Examination (written)

Description: This is a seen invigilated end of semester written examination. A set of questions related to the topics covered in the unit will be distributed by Week 12 in order to allow you adequate time for preparation. A set number of these questions will appear on the final exam. You must complete three responses in essay format. This examination will be completed in a pre-determined, restricted time span under invigilated conditions as summative assessment.

Assessment name: Placement Performance

Description: 2 days equivalent of site visits and 2 separate weeks of Field Experience block (weeks 9 and 11) where students apply relevant learning and demonstration of professional capabilities in schooling/educational context. Literacy and numeracy standards as required by the profession are an inherent requirement of this practicum.

Weight: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Due Date: 2 days equivalent of site visits and field experience blocks (Weeks 9 and 11) all complete by end week 11.
