  • Overview

    Strong experimental design and execution skills are some of the most important attributes of any physicist, whether working in research or industry, experimental or theoretical. This unit aims to develop your skills in project planning, time management, experimental setup, and reporting. You will undertake several self-managed experiments along with supervised practicals using research equipment.

    Learning Outcomes
    On successful completion of this unit, you will provide evidence of
    1.    Collection and analysis of data using scientific equipment during practical experiments in laboratory settings
    2.    Analysis, design and construction of electronic instrumentation
    3.    Critical and creative reasoning and problem solving techniques (using data acquired or provided) to evaluate results
    4. Communicating scientific arguments relevant to professional practice by producing written scientific reports incorporating visual representations of scientific concepts and numeric data, including the generation of graphs.

    Content
    In the experimental component of this unit, you will complete a number of tasks designed to develop your skill in experimental techniques and data analysis. You will be introduced to the statistical analysis of the data with a set of practical experiments. You will apply this knowledge to measure fundamental physical constants like electron charge and electron mass, evaluating the statistical and systematical measurement errors. 


    The instrumentation component of the unit is designed to give you a working knowledge of basic electronics starting from the more simple elements and analysing the function of active components like diodes transistor and operational amplifier circuits, which are found in a great variety of scientific instruments. You will work collaboratively in a team between two to four to build and test electronic circuits including filters and amplifiers based on standard electronic components.
