Overview
This unit introduces you to the history of Western fashion from the 14th century to the 21st century. The unit will guide you to understanding key aesthetic changes in the history of fashion, the role of fashion in defining social and cultural identity, and how fashion is a significant form of visual culture linked to historical, cultural and social contexts. This unit will introduce you to concepts that are essential to the study of history and theory of fashion.Learning OutcomesOn completion of this unit you should be able to:- Recognise key historical, cultural and aesthetic concepts in fashion, from antiquity to modern fashion.
- Identify, evaluate and synthesise key aesthetic changes in style in relation to intercultural and social developments.
- Apply written, visual and oral communication skills for fashion contexts using academic writing conventions.
ContentThis unit addresses content such as:- Styles of fashionable dress in the west up to the 21st century;
- Historical and contemporary aesthetic theories;
- Key figures in the development of fashion from the Renaissance to modern times;
- Significant developments in the production and consumption of modern fashion - including the rise of the designer, industrialisation and consumption.
