  • Overview

    This unit develops your understanding of early childhood science education for children from birth to eight years of age. It develops knowledge, skills and dispositions that will enable you to apply these understandings to effective inquiry-based science teaching and learning in early childhood centres and the early years of school.
    Learning Outcomes
    To successfully complete this unit at the Introductory and Developmental Level you will provide evidence of:
    Course Learning Outcome A - Know students and how they learn:
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities
    • Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and teaching strategies that support participation and learning of students with disability
    Course Learning Outcome B- Know content and how to teach it:
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts and the content structure and teaching strategies for science education
    • Use science curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to select content and resources, and design effective learning and teaching sequences and plans
    • Know and understand literacy and numeracy teaching strategies and their application in teaching areas
    • Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students
    Course Learning Outcome E - Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
    • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning

    • Identify strategies that support inclusive participation and engagement in science learning
    This unit introduces the discipline of science, and the content of curriculum frameworks relevant to science education for children in early childhood centres and the early years of school. It includes effective inquiry pedagogies for young children's science education, and strategies to engage all young children in science learning.
    Approaches to Teaching and Learning
    This unit engages you in practical application of inquiry learning through science tasks and strategies relevant to the education of young children. You will be encouraged to discuss the science content, curriculum links, pedagogies and assessment issues to develop your skills in evaluating resources and planning for children's meaningful science learning.
    Assessment name: Portfolio
    Description: Portfolio paper, presentation and teaching plan: The portfolio will involve a piece of extended writing related to inquiry learning in science, and a teaching plan based on a concept presented in class or online.
