  • Overview

    Analysis, designing, building, testing and maintaining are the core elements of engineering; Foundations of Engineering Design provides you with fundamental knowledge and skills to design, build and test simple engineering systems through a number of exploratory, hands-on activities, leading to the design and build of a practical engineering system. This unit is the first of a series of engineering design units which form the backbone of the engineering program.
    Learning Outcomes
    On completion of this unit you will:
    1. Apply foundational theoretic knowledge of science and engineering fundamentals to support a simple design project as a team.
    2. Apply foundational systems thinking, project management/leadership and design skills to an engineering project and reflect on your and your peers progress using critical interpretation and evaluation skills
    3. Demonstrate foundational creativity and innovation in the context of a simple multi-disciplinary design, build and test engineering project using effective oral and written communication skills in professional and lay domains.
    4. Apply collaborative strategies (through teamwork) to identify, plan, manage, and complete tasks and projects
    5. Show risk management and health & safety responsibilities - this learning outcome is not graded.
    • Foundational engineering principles relating to electromechanical, structural and energy transfer components of engineering systems.
    • Basic project construction tools, materials and fixtures required for simple engineering problem solving.
    • Experimenting with simple system components.
    • Integrating electromechanical, structural and energy transfer components to form a simple engineering system.
    • Application of the basic principles of design, communication, and project management.
    Approaches to Teaching and Learning
    Your learning in this unit is framed around exploratory, collaborative and (hands on) project based learning. In this unit, you learn-by-doing introductory principles of engineering design and project management, through a series of simple hands-on activities, prototypes, and a design/build/test project. You will develop your underpinning science and engineering knowledge, applied through collaborative building, breaking and learning exercises, and project element design, build and test cycles. Collaborative learning spaces are used to host structured hands-on learning activities based on interactive bench-top exercises to explore key concepts. Design studio space is used for familiarisation with fundamental concepts, tools, materials and fixtures, which are useful for the construction of your multi-disciplinary group-based design and build project. This Engineers Without Borders (EWB) inspired project, supported through weekly workshops, will tie together the theoretical topics presented in weekly lectures and studios.
