  • Overview

    Working collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and clients in groups and teams is a key skill in human services and social work practice, particularly when working with vulnerable and often marginalised groups across diverse settings. This unit provides you with an opportunity to apply knowledge of the dynamics of groups and teams and skills for effective engagement and intervention.
    Learning Outcomes
    1. describe group and team knowledge and skills required for effective group practice and structured program development;
    2. critically apply group and team knowledge, skills and values to a specific group work intervention;
    3. reflect on your ability to facilitate a group, observe and participate in group and team activities; and
    4. undertake and critique the planning, design and implementation of a structured group program within a team context.
    The unit provides knowledge on the nature of group and team work interventions and contributes to the development and integration of professional knowledge, skills and values relevant to working with specific groups in multi-disciplinary team contexts.
    Topics include:
    Module 1: Contextualising group work and team practice
    • Historical development and contemporary contexts of group work practice
    • Types, purposes and classifications of groups and teams
    • Theoretical models of group and team practice and application across diverse formal and informal contexts
    • Group dynamics, group life cycles and transitions Experiential learning and models of learning in planning and facilitating the group
    Module 2: Group formation, performance and practice contexts
    • Planning and implementing a structured group program: Issues of group structure, composition and change goals and evaluation techniques
    • Group formation: group norms, change goals and group culture
    • Leadership, power and facilitation of groups and teams: communication in groups, group interaction and decision-making
    • Techniques for managing creativity and controversy in groups
    • Group and team work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and diverse vulnerable populations (CaLD, older people, young people, people with disabilities and refugee people)
    • Legal and ethical dimensions of group work in agency contexts
    Module 3: Professional practice and group work review, evaluation and endings
    • Group and team professional practice in social work and human services: Understanding diverse agency systems and developing agency skills
    • Team development, maintenance and productivity: improving the effectiveness of teams across diverse and multi-disciplinary contexts
    • Facilitating successful group outcomes and transfer of learning to real world contexts
    • Group evaluation and termination: processes of group closure, measurement and evaluation methods
    Approaches to Teaching and Learning
    The unit is offered in a blended learning mode via integrated campus and virtual online learning (including Blackboard, multimedia and podcasts). In the week preceding the start of semester (Orientation Week), you will attend an intensive two-day workshop on-campus. You will attend a further six (6) workshop sessions (x3hour duration) on-campus during semester. (Check timetabling). Student learning is supported through an experiential learning method which requires students to engage in facilitated learning activities and work collaboratively with peers.
    You will engage in online activities between sessions (online Blackboard platform). Learning and teaching will incorporate an overview of relevant theory and practice, a discussion of the material relevant to specific group and team practice topics, multimedia (power point, video, podcast and online material), and in-class workshop experiential activities. . Workshop sessions will also provide a space for facilitating group work activities and planning, a structured group work program. Real world group and team applications are used to consolidate and integrate learning activities.
    There is an expectation that student work is of a high standard and commensurate with third year professional practice knowledge and skills development and integration.
    Each assessment item is designed to measure your ability to apply the knowledge and skills stated in the unit learning outcomes.
    Formative feedback and support will be provided to students throughout the semester in the design, implementation and evaluation of their group work simulation and individual submissions. The first piece of assessment has a formative and summative component whereby formative feedback is provided through workshop sessions, group discussions, engagement with campus based and online learning activities and individual consultation. The final assessment is summative, and has a formative component whereby feedback on key learnings for professional practice will be offered in workshop sessions, on-campus and virtual learning activities and student consultation.
    Assessment name: Simulation with Professional P
    Description: Simulation Design with Professional Plan Simulation design of a structured group program replicating application in a specific human service work place setting of one aspect of the program (Group submission). You will then compile documentation from the simulated experiential activity into a professional plan and do an individual write-up of the simulated group work structured program. You will critically analyse and discuss the design, planning, implementation and facilitation aspects of the program with reference to knowledge, skills and relevance to real-world professional practice (Individual work submission).

    Description: You are required to undertake an end-of-semester examination measuring your understanding of the workshop materials and readings and knowledge of group and team skills required for effective group practice.
