  • Overview

    Social technologies are changing the way we work, learn and play. This unit takes a hands-on approach to learning and encourages you to play with social technologies. You will critically explore a range of established, new and emerging social technologies, and how they can be used in different contexts. You will explore how people experience social media and consider your own professional and personal identities and how these are related in an increasingly hyper-connected world. The unit explores the complex social, political, legal, economic and ethical issues related to use of social technologies in everyday life. It also introduces you to the role of social technologies in education, lifelong learning, business, and society more generally.

    Learning Outcomes
    On completion of this unit you will be able to:
    1.    Apply analytical and critical thinking skills to understand the way people experience social technologies, including how people construct personal and professional online identities
    2.    Assess and critically reflect on social technologies and their applications
    3.    Demonstrate broad knowledge of issues and topics related to social technologies and deep knowledge of one or more specific topics
    4.    Apply verbal, written and visual communication skills that effectively convey information in social media contexts


    This unit will introduce you to a range of lenses that can help you to understand how people experience social technologies. You will engage with a range of social technologies to prompt critical reflection on their applications. Case studies will allow you to explore real world applications of social technologies and to develop contexutalised understandings of issues and topics related to social technologies, including (but not limited to) law, ethics, privacy, identity and reputation management, social and political equity, the digital divide, politics, activism, technological convergence, and the rise and role of mobile devices. The unit focuses specifically on social media in community setting and everyday life.
