This unit investigates the transformational relationship between information technology (IT) and individuals, society and organisations. It focuses on determining and evaluating the impact IT can have from a range of perspectives. By examining contemporary technological advances, students will gain a perspective on their application in social and organisational settings, how they are used to advance social and organisational goals and how IT professionals enable these technologies. Case studies across a variety of domains will link theory with practice, and build your understanding of the depth and breadth of change, both positive and negative, that is driven by information technology. This unit will help inform your future career path and unit selection over the course of your degree.
Upon successful completion of this unit you will provide evidence that you can:
1. Apply relevant frameworks to identify the impact of information technology across a variety of domains.
2. Apply contemporary technical tools to analyse a big dataset and visualise the outcomes of such an analysis.
3. Identify how the impact of IT influences individuals, organisations and society.
4. The application of specific professional presentation techniques to better inform audiences and influence decision makers.
5. Analyse the ethical implications of the application of disruptive technologies and systems.
You will learn the impact that IT has had on transforming the way individuals, groups and institutions behave historically, and in contemporary contexts. By examining mainstream technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Visualisation of Big Data, Mobile Computing, The Internet of Things you will gain an appreciation of the breadth of potential careers. In addition, you will personally examine cutting edge and contemporary technologies drawn from the Gartner Hype Curve, which tracks the latest technologies from industry e.g. Robotic Process Automation, Blockchain, Brain-Computer Interface.
By considering the impact of contemporary technologies within particular industry settings you will contextualise your specific topics of interest and communicate these to your peers. Industry speakers will also put these technologies into context and provide advice on how to strategically manage your career options and university choices to build these career options.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
