    Course Description
    Introduction & overview of the theory & practice of Human Resource Management including strategic & international HRM. Students gain an appreciation of the breadth & scope of HRM.

    After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
    1. identify the frameworks and systems for HRM, the components (or functions) of HRM systems, and the relationships among them
    2. identify the theoretical principles underlying best practice in HRM
    3. link HRM objectives with organisational objectives
    4. develop practical skills in HRM
    5. apply HRM concepts and theories to the analysis of organisational practices
    6. communicate an analysis and recommendations relating to an organisation's HRM practices.
    7. critique an organisation's HRM system and identify ways of improving it

    Task Description:
    Students are required to complete:
    1. the written learning unit prior to the tutorial class
    2. and any associated written exercises in the tutorial class.
    The learning units and additional tutorial materials (e.g. case studies, scenarios) are available from the MGTS2604 Blackboard site.

    Task Description: Students are required to submit a written assignment (2,000-2250 words) addressing one of the four essay topics below. The essay should demonstrate that you have grasped the theoretical concepts of HRM, that you are able to interpret research in a critical manner, and that you can link theory with HRM practice. The essay should incorporate at least 15 academic peer reviewed journal articles (1995-2015) from journals of the ABDC list. The prescribed textbook may be referenced, but the essay should not use additional textbooks as references - that is books that cover the broad field of HRM and are designed specifically for use in tertiary courses - check the preface and/or introduction.
    The questions are:
    • Critically discuss the role of line management in strengthening the relationship between strategic HRM and better firm performance.
    • Critically review the term ?organizational climate? in terms of the academic literature. Address how organizational climate is formed.
    • Critically assess the organizational antecedents of workplace mistreatment. Review the prevention and intervention strategies for workplace mistreatment and identify the research gap(s).
    • Critically assess the benefits of individual performance pay. Discuss whether individual performance pay is harmful for team performance.

    Task Description: The final exam in this course will cover all topics; that includes all material presented in lectures (by the instructor and guest speakers), in textbook readings and in tutorial learning modules and exercises. The exam tests both your understanding of the theoretical knowledge and its application. The exam will be a combination of multiple choice and written short answers.
