  • Overview

    Course Description
    This course develops the scientific and engineering skills necessary to design energy-efficient and sustainable buildings and built environments. The course covers fundamentals of heat and mass transfer within and through the building envelope, active and passive modifiers (including green roofs and walls) and exchanges with the surrounding environment. Sustainable approaches to supporting transport and water and waste infrastructure in the context of the building set within a precinct will also be studied. Current sustainability certification schemes are presented and discussed critically (e.g., Green Star, LEED, BREEAM).


    Learning Objectives
    After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

    1  identify and describe key components of the built environment, the need for sustainability and the assessment of sustainability performance
    2  quantitatively describe the physics of heat transfer in the built environment, solve the governing equations, estimate heat transfer fluxes and derive key descriptors
    3  quantitatively describe the physics of moisture transfer in the building fabric, solve the governing equations, estimate heat transfer fluxes and derive key descriptors
    4  describe and determine energy auditing and energy efficiency strategies in the built environment
    5  apply hydraulic principles to water sensitive urban design
    6  quantify available renewable energy resources (solar, wind energy) and understand current technology
    7  quantitatively explain the interaction of a building with its surrounding environment
    8  describe and explain the main features of sustainable built environment assessment tools
    9  assess the sustainability of options for solid waste management
    10  describe the basic physics of noise pollution and perform noise assessment calculations
