Students gain an understanding of the historical background to engineering, design and materials relevant to construction that has led to the development of the modern industry and its methods and organisation. Interaction with industry partners provides a contemporary view of relevant issues such as the application of digital technologies in the industry and the introduction of other innovative practices. The roles and responsibilities of and relationships between the various professionals and other industry stakeholders are discussed. Students are encouraged to consider industry issues in a critical and constructive manner.Learning Objectives1. The capacity to outline the structure and operation of the broader property development industry and of the building/construction industry in particular.2. Knowledge of the main stakeholders in the property and construction industries and the roles and responsibilities of property and construction professionals.3. An understanding of the historical development of the construction industry and how that has shaped the industry as it operates today.4. An awareness of innovation and its importance in the property development/construction sphere5. An understanding of the framework of the development industry and its processes that will underpin studentsâ subsequent studies and careers.6. Entry-level understanding of key issues such as workplace health and safety, industrial relations and work/life balance for construction professionals.
