This is an introductory subject dealing with fundamental practices of news gathering & writing for the news media. It considers definitions of news & the relative weighting of news values. Students are introduced to news writing conventions through both simulated and real-life reporting experiences. The subject analyses & implements methods of attribution & verification. It introduces students to the news interview & basic reporting assignments. Students perform reporting duties for a campus publication & community radio program.Learning Objectives1. The ability to research and write a feature stories, creative non-fiction and fiction for a defined market.
2. Demonstration of professionalism and ethical behaviour.
3. The ability to create stories with characters, scenes and dialogue.
4. An understanding of the theory behind creative writing practice.
5. The ability to recognise the various ingredients of a successful story or feature and build them into your work.
