  • Overview

    This subject explores both practical and theoretical aspects of electronic music and teaches students the techniques needed to create electronic music in a wide variety of music styles. The subject introduces concepts including sound synthesis, sampling, signal processing and algorithmic composition. Students learn techniques in recording and editing sound, and the use of digital audio workstation software.

    Teaching and learning strategies
    Classes will incorporate a range of teaching and learning strategies including short presentations, videos, demonstrations, computer lab sessions, discussion of readings, sound and music examples and student group work. These will be complemented by independent student activities, work-in?progress discussions and presentation of assessment tasks.
    Topics covered include audio production and sound techniques, signal processing, delay, reverberation, equalisation, compression, mastering, sound synthesis techniques, electronic musical instruments and apps for electronic music production.
    Minimum requirements
    Attendance at tutorials is essential in this subject because important information is only available through the essential workshopping and interchange of ideas with other students and the tutor. An attendance roll will be taken at each class. Students who fail to attend 85% of classes will be refused to have their final assessment marked. (see Rule 3.8).
