  • Overview

    Description
    This subject is designed to provide students who have no prior knowledge of the German language with basic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. It also facilitates an understanding of and engagement with the sociocultural contexts in which the language is used. Students take active part in learning activities to practise and consolidate their language skills with their peers.
    This subject corresponds to Level A1 (basic user) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe).
    Subject objectives
    A. Communicate effectively in oral and written form, in German, within the range of situations set out in the subject program. This corresponds to the skill set for students at the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
    B. Demonstrate critical cultural awareness of and intercultural competencies relating to German-speaking peoples and societies.
    C. Effectively employ strategies and resources for independent learning as relevant to the subject program.
    D. Critically and creatively engage with the specific topics discussed in the subject program.
    Contribution to the development of graduate attributes
    This subject engages with the following Bachelor of Arts International Studies Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs), which are tailored to the Graduate Attributes set for all graduates of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:

    Teaching and learning strategies
    In line with the UTS Model of internationalised and practice-based learning, the following learning strategies are embedded in this subject:
    Communicative approach: Use of authentic text and situations (music, videos, articles, news clips, films, role-plays, interviews, etc.); focus on functional aspects of language; encouragement to connect own personal experiences to language learning; use of German when communicating with other students or teacher in class whenever possible.
    Flipped learning: Using class time for interactive practise and advancement of skills through work in pairs, small and large groups and/or presentations.
    Blended learning: Preparation for lessons with exercises and reading/listening/viewing/writing/speaking activities; effective use of resources supplied to support learning. As this is an 8-credit-point subject, the approximate time commitment expected from students is 12 hours per week, including class time.
    Inquiry-based learning: Students customise their learning experience to promote their engagement with German speaking people and societies.

    Minimum requirements
    This subject is intended for students who have either no prior exposure to German (through study, family, friends or travel) or minimal exposure and knowledge as determined by a language level assessment. Students who completed an e-request for enrolment giving false information in this regard (ie understating their previous exposure) may not be allowed to complete the subject. Students who are enrolled in this subject and have had earlier exposure but not sat a placement test are required to contact the subject coordinator before the end of week two to arrange a level assessment and appropriate enrolment.
    In order to pass this subject, you must earn an overall total of 50 marks or more for the subject. There are 12 weeks of Language and Culture classes, which include in-class tests. Tutorials are an important part of the learning experience in this subject. Students are expected to attend and participate in learning activities in all tutorials. While this subject has a significant self-study component, it is very difficult to pass without attending all classes. Students who miss more than five classes without providing documented evidence of illness or misadventure will not be given special consideration.
