  • Overview

    An introduction to M?ori language with emphasis on pronunciation, greetings and forms of language in particular cultural contexts.

    In this course students will develop a basic conversational fluency and proficiency in the pronunciation of the M?ori language. Students will learn some basic sentence structure patterns, gaining confidence in using these patterns both in writing and in speaking, as well as aural confidence in listening to basic M?ori language.

    Learning Outcomes
    On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
    -Show proficiency in pronunciation
    -Exchange personal information about themselves and their families

    They will also be able to understand and use in speech and writing the following grammatical and usage structures:
    -Asking how someone is or was
    -Using personal pronouns
    -Using personal pronouns to say 'and'
    -Using singular possessive pronouns
    -Asking who someone is, where they are from, and where they live
    -Counting; Asking how many, and asking how old someone is
    -Asking where someone is going, and what they are going for
    -Asking where someone or something is or was
    -Giving orders, including the use of Kia and Me
    -Using directional adverbs
    -Using verbal particles Kei te, Ka, Kua, I
    -Telling the time, and saying when something happened
    -The days of the week
