    Study of colour, pattern and lighting concepts and technologies and their meaning, role and creative applications.

    SARC323 covers the following themes:

    5. Visual Perception: the Interaction of Colours and Light
    6. Psychological Perception: Meaning, Culture, Fashion & Style
    7. Integrating Visual and Psychological Perception
    8. Poetic Interpretation: Shadows, Reflections, Memory and Time
    9. 4-dimensional Interpretation: Inside, Outside, In-between

    SARC323 provides an in-depth analysis of the fundamental roles of colour and light when conceived in relation to 3-dimensional composition and aesthetics. Students are explicitly encouraged to work within their own 3-dimensional design discipline: Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Architecture. SARC323 promotes the use of colour and pattern and light within 3-dimensional as well as 4-dimensional contexts, encouraging explorations of perceptual transformation over time through critical applications of colour, pattern and light inside, outside and in-between form and space. Colour and light theories are individually tested throughout the term, in workshops involving the class as a whole. In this way, students are exposed to diverse responses to theoretical design challenges and distinctive products of discovery from a variety of unique perspectives.

    The primary aim of SARC323 Colour, Pattern, Light is to explore, confront and critically challenge contemporary applications of light and colour theory in 3-dimensional design, within our own unique cultural context. SARC323 specifically encourages students to cultivate a strong personal philosophy based on critical judgement with respect to colour, light, pattern and composition. Colour, pattern and light will be critically tested not as surface applications to an otherwise completed design, but rather as fundamental bases of 3-dimensional design initiative and discovery. SARC323 aims to fully develop a personal sense of critical judgement and accountability toward the use of colour, light, pattern, composition and aesthetics. Further objectives include fundamental problem-solving through inventive response, challenging enquiry through poetic interpretation and evidencing intention through high levels of craft.

    SARC323 is fundamentally visual in nature. It has a 3-dimensional emphasis, extending into explorations of 4-dimensional opportunities. This course encourages students to investigate, to experiment and to develop a personal position in response to theoretical design enquiries.

    To support achievement of the aims of this course, each student must fundamentally engage ideas, language, meaning, poetic interpretation and craft. Design is the embodiment of ideas. Ideas deal with the conceptual domain and its embodiment in an intellectual and disciplinary-based language. Design-based ideas involve relationships and orderings which must be understood, and towards which commitments must be made. Meaning grows as a result of the embodied experience of such understanding and commitment. Clear consciousness of such understanding is thus a critical part of design, the design process and the ultimate design product.

    Students who pass this course will be able to:
    1: Be fluent with concepts and language of colour, pattern and light, in order to communicate clearly.
    2: Develop methods for researching visual perception and the interaction of colours, pattern and lighting, meaning and culture.
    3: Evidence meaning and invite critical enquiry in ways that provoke thought and illustrate intent.
