A description of the pathogenesis, morphology, and complications of common benign and malignant diseases.
This course begins by outlining the basic pathogenic processes including cell injury, death, and inflammation and extends to cover benign and malignant diseases of the human body. Special emphasis on diseases of the major organ systems of the body including heart, brain, lung, kidney, liver, alimentary, bone, reproductive, breast and skin. The pathology of each system will be discussed, with reference to clinical presentation, laboratory investigation, and macroscopic and microscopic appearances of predominantly commonly occurring examples (where appropriate). The following key lecture topics cover basic organ anatomy and histology, followed by the pathological processes of Cell Injury and Death, Acute and Chronic Inflammation, Tissue Repair and Neoplasia, followed by the pathology of specific organs. The pathology of the major organ systems will include: Heart and Blood Vessel, Skin, Breast, Alimentary system, Liver, Kidney, Lung, Male and Female reproductive systems, Bone, and Blood. In addition to the topics covered above, case studies on the Immunotherapy of cancer, TB, Pathology of drug abuse, Pathology of pain, Schistosomiasis, Multiple Sclerosis, Niemann-Pick Type C disease, Diabetes, Colo-rectal Cancer and Neurodegenerative diseases will also be covered.
Course learning objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
- Understand the cellular processes occurring in specific pathological states.
- Identify by anatomy and histology, a number of normal organs and describe their function.
- Describe a number of human diseases affecting major organs.
- Research information from published sources and summarise this information.
- Record experimental data and present this data in a written laboratory report.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
