  • Overview

    An opportunity to develop practical skills, competence and confidence in the chemistry laboratory with particular reference to the synthesis and purification of molecules and compounds, functional group transformations; physical, chemical and spectroscopic characterisation, and multi-step syntheses. The programme provides an introduction to the nature of research involving organic and inorganic bench chemistry.

    Course content
    Participants in CHEM 205 will take part in two laboratory sessions per week (one 4 hour, one 2 hour) and will work independently through the prescribed list of experiments as detailed in the laboratory manual. These experiments have been designed to complement the 200-level lecture courses and will expose participants to a wide-range of equipment and processes found in a modern chemical laboratory. Each student will be expected to prepare prior to their laboratory session by reading through the experimental description, and by preparing flowcharts of the experimental process to be undertaken. This will provide background to the experiment and any possible hazards that may be encountered. There are TEN experiments altogether. The first EIGHT experiments MUST BE COMPLETED to pass the course. Course assessment will, however, be based upon all ten of the experiments in the laboratory manual. Other assessments include a final (practical) examination and the quality of the participant’s written notebook. Course related information will be available in the laboratory manual, on Blackboard and will also be written on the whiteboards in LB115.

    Course learning objectives
    Students who pass this course should be able to:

    • Identify and use basic laboratory equipment, glassware and procedures.
    • Purify compounds via several different techniques (recrystallization, distillation, column chromatography).
    • Safely handle concentrated acids, bases, flammable solvents, and toxic substances.
    • Perform multi-step syntheses of at least three steps.
    • Plan laboratory procedures in a safe and practical manner, including searching MSDS information describing material hazards, and search literature sources to confirm physical/chemical/spectroscopic data.
    • students must consistently demonstrate safe laboratory practice and behaviour.
