  • Overview

    Plant and algal physiology and structure with emphasis on adaptations of the whole organism; diversity and evolution of photosynthetic organisms (including blue-green bacteria, algae, and plants) and fungi.

    Course content
    BIOL 227 is the sister course to BIOL 228 (Animal Diversity) and covers the diversity of photosynthetic organisms.  Biology 227 builds upon your knowledge of the basic principles of form and function of land plants gained in BIOL113, and cell biology BIOL111 to expand your understanding of the cellular, evolutionary and ecological diversity of photosynthetic organisms. Your previous experience with using a microscope will be important as many of these organisms are small or have structures that are small. We will learn to describe their characters (what they look like, so you can identify them) and their evolution (how they are related to each other, so you can predict their characters).
    Course learning objectives
    Students who pass this course will be able to:

    • Identify the main phyla of photosynthetic organisms, and classes of land plants. Be able to explain the inter-relationships of these organisms.
    • Describe an organism using the appropriate language
    • Collect scientific data, interpret and analyse this data and communicate your scientific findings both in written and oral forms.
    • Gain experience assessing the quality of your own and your peer’s work, through Peer and Self Evaluation of projects.
