Course Description

GENERAL GOALS
This course is intended for students to acquire a basic knowledge of oral microbiology in general aspects of clinical microbiology, focusing on the role of microorganisms in infectious processes located in the oral cavity . Thus, the objectives of this course are:
1. Understand the concepts of microbiology
2. Knowing the general characteristics of bacteria, viruses , fungi and parasites
3. Knowing the related infectious diseases and microorganisms especially those producing oral infections
4. Learn the fundamentals for proper use of antimicrobial drugs.
5. Develop skills relating to microbiological diagnostic techniques
6. Develop skills related to obtaining buccal samples, transportation and processing and evaluate laboratory tests from the same
7. Learn the basic principles of immunization and prevention of infectious diseases.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
R1 Understand the types and characteristics of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites
R2 Understand the main microorganisms that constitute the normal flora
R3 Know the defense mechanisms of the human body against microorganism
R4 Knowing the microorganisms involved in major infectious diseases and especially in the oral cavity
R5 Know the main techniques of microbiological diagnosis
R6 mechanism of action of antibiotics and the main indications for therapeutic use
R7 know the main methods of prevention, sterilization and disinfection and how to use them properly.
R8 Know the latest trends in scientific knowledge of oral microbiology
