  • Overview

    This course provides an introduction to the study of religion and religions. Students are introduced to the analysis of religious symbols, myths, rituals, ethics and traditions. Special attention is given to indigenous religious traditions (particularly in Africa), Asian religions (including Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism) and New Religious Movements that have emerged as alternative sources of religious identity and meaning in the world.

    DP requirements: 80% attendance at lectures and tutorials in all sections of the course. Submission of all work by due dates, and attainment of an average mark of at least 50% for all assignments.

    Assessment: Coursework and class tests count 50%; one two-hour examination in June counts 30%; final essay counts 20%. A 45% subminimum is required for the two-hour examination.
