Overview
PURPOSE
The purpose of this module is to expose students to the livestock industry in South Africa and the Eastern Cape. Introduce students to the natural resources that are available for livestock production in South Africa and the sustainable use of these natural resources. Introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of nutrition and feeding livestock and the importance of feeding strategies in livestock production.LEARNING OUTCOMES
Recognise the importance of the livestock industry to the economy of South Africa and the Eastern Cape.
Determine the major animal enterprises and breeds that contribute to the livestock industry in South Africa.
Identify and evaluate the potential of the natural resources that are available for livestock production and sustainable use of these natu resources.
Determine the grazing potential and the utilisation of the veld.
Explain the nutrition and feeding of ruminants in the livestock industry.
Determine the basic components of feed or feedstuffs and the concepts of supplementary feeding and licks.CORE CONTENT
