Overview
PURPOSE
This module aims to introduce students to political and policy issues in South Africa. Further this module serves to introduce students to theoretical positions within a South African context. This module incorporates political parties, political economy, racial- ethnic-gender paradigms and the branches of government. The objective is to inform students that the South African political environment continues to change since 1994. The purpose is to inform students not only of the role of government, but of non-state actors, citizens and the role of the Constitution.LEARNING OUTCOMES
-Critically engage the processes of government.
-Comprehend the paradigms in South Africa as it relates to race, ethnicity, religion, class and gender.
-To understand the role of political parties.
-To determine the various international issues that affect South Africa?s foreign policy and international relations.
-To examine notions of nation building.CORE CONTENT
Institutions of national decision-making.
Policy-making in contemporary South Africa.
Political economy and foreign policy.Evaluation criteria
1 essay, 2 tests as well as a 2-hour formal examination during the June examination period. 1 x 2-hour examination, 50% class mark and 50% examination mark.
