Environmental Health Management and Administration II

Syllabus

PURPOSE
This module will prepare students to develop their administrative and managerial skills within an environmental health context.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On completion of this module students will be able to:

identify and explain the particular terminology associated with meetings;
identify and explain the different types of meetings and explain the role of the key role-players during formal environmental health meetings;
effectively and efficiently run a meeting (executive, general, committee, one on one);
take appropriate actions before, during, and after meetings;
identify and demonstrate the use of relevant office equipment;
distinguish between leasing and buying and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each;
describe the characteristics and responsibilities of a good office secretary;
describe good etiquette during telephonic conversations;
identify and explain the use of the different filing systems;
identify and explain the characteristics / requirements of a scientifically formulated environmental health report;
appropriately apply the principles of ethics and professionalism during meetings, office practice and report writing and justify decisions and actions based on these principles.

Evaluation criteria

This module will be assessed during an examination in November/December 1 x 3-hour examination. To pass this module a minimum final mark of 50% must be obtained. This final mark is made up of a class mark (40%) and the exam mark (60%).
