    Syllabus

    PURPOSE
    The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the scope of practice of the environmental health profession in South Africa and to integrate environmental health planning principles into the practice of the profession in South Africa. This module is designed to highlight the importance of the environment as an inter-related system. Housing aspects and building materials and construction methods are examined in order to enable students to ensure safe and healthy working, living and recreational environments.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    • Identify, define and explain the scope of the environmental health profession in South Africa.
    • Identify and explain the influence of the ecology on the rendering of environmental health.
    • Identify, define and explain sustainable development from an environmental health perspective, issues that threaten sustainable development and initiatives that have been undertaken to promote it.
    • Identify, analyze and explain the causes and impact of urbanization on environmental health service delivery.
    • Identify and discuss the process involved in town planning as well as the role of the environmental health practitioner in town planning.
    • Identify, discuss and explain the use of different building materials as well as the process of basic building construction.
    • Explain the housing challenge and identify and discuss the legislation, policy and guidelines relevant to the provision of housing in South Africa.
