Syllabus
PURPOSE
To equip students with the essential knowledge and specific skills in order to be competent in exercise program prescription for health purposes for the general population and to expose students to the theoretical constructs of exercise program prescription for clients with unique/special needs.LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will be able to:- understand the process of client consultation and health appraisal;
- evaluate and stratify the health status of potential clients;
- apply risk stratification criteria to an individual client to determine suitability for and the selection of the appropriate assessments;
- supervise various fitness programs for health-related fitness purposes for the general population without any risks involved according to the FITT?S principle including progression and overload;
- design and instruct safe and effective plyometric and speed training exercise programs;
- discuss exercise recommendations and precautions for clients who are pregnant, older or pre-adolescent;
- describe developmentally appropriate physical activity programs for pre-adolescents that demonstrate an understanding of age-specific needs and concerns;
- delineate the scope of practice of the personal trainer when working with people who have nutritional and metabolic concerns;
- discuss the appropriate exercise prescription and program design for individuals who are obese, overweight, or have hyperlipidemia, eating disorders or diabetes;
- understand the pathophysiology and risk factors of clients with cardiovascular disease, such as; hypertension and myocardial infarction;
- understand the stages of the various diseases and how exercise can be used to enhance the client?s quality of life.
