    Syllabus

    PURPOSE
    The purpose of this module is to introduce students to key texts and contexts of the African Literature.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
    At the end of this module, students will be able to:

    • use post-colonial concepts through which to engage critically with post-colonial texts;
    • examine or analyse representations of cultural conflicts within African societies as well as between African culture and Western culture;
    • discuss the interface between African oral tradition and Western literary tradition in African literature written in English;
    • understand socio-political and historical implications of the processes of decolonization;
    • write well-argued and well-constructed essays on specific topics and texts in this course;
    • think critically on gender, race and class relations under patriarchy and colonialism.

    CORE CONTENT
    Students are introduced to the cogent use of the following critical concepts:

    • Alienation, ambivalence, ambiguity, assimilation, alterity, ?Other?, Self, centre, margin, binary opposition, subaltern, cultural identity, subjectivity, masculinity, femininity, colonialism, post-colonialism, decolonization, imperialism, patriarchy, racism, intertextuality, re-writing.
