    PURPOSE
    This module will provide students with an overview and basic understanding of the role of conflict in society, the most important scholarly approaches and theories, and a general overview of the negotiation process.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
    On completion of this module, the student will:
    -view conflict from a new perspective on its social utility;
    -be familiar with the various scholarly explanations of social conflict;
    -be familiar with the different types of conflict that operate in society;
    -have an understanding of the various manifestations of conflict in political context, and the specific strategies commonly used to combat these;
    -be familiar with the variety of conflict management strategies available;
    -demonstrate an understanding of the main negotiation strategies.

    Conflict in the Social Sciences:
    -Pre-Psychological approaches.
    -Psychological Approaches.
    -Sociological Approaches.
    Conflict Types.
    Bases of Social Conflict.
    Conflict Dynamics.
    Introduction to Conflict Management.
    Negotiation, facilitation and mediation.
    Macro-Political Conflict Management:
    -Elites.
    -The State.
    -Politically Marginalised groups.

    Evaluation criteria
    1 x 2-hour examination, 50% class mark + 50% examination mark.
