Overview
PURPOSE
Via a chronological study, this module aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the diversity of overlapping music genres, styles and fusions that constitute American jazz. The lecture series will encompass discussion of socio-historical context and analysis of seminal jazz artists combined with intensive listening of representative repertoire.LEARNING OUTCOMES
Describe the general characteristics of the jazz genre.
Describe the elements of specific jazz styles.
Provide biographical details pertaining to a representative selection of major jazz artists.
Identify aurally specific jazz styles, artists and repertoire.

Pre 1900: Origins of Jazz (Blues & Ragtime).
1900 ? 1920: Dixieland.
1920?s: Jazz in Chicago and New York.
1930?s: Big Band Swing.
1940?s: Bebop and Cubop.
1950?s: Cool Jazz and Hard Bop.
1960?s: Free Jazz.
1970?s: Electric Jazz Fusions and other (con)fusions.
