    Syllabus

    PURPOSE
    To provide students with knowledge and understanding of Exercise Psychology and Mental Skills Training, to equip students with the necessary skills to work effectively as exercise leaders and to mentally prepare athletes for competition.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
    Students will be able to:

    discuss/explain principles of exercise psychology;
    apply exercise psychology principles in the exercise world;
    implement basic mental skills training in the sport coaching role.

    CORE CONTENT
    Exercise and psychological well-being.
    Exercise adherence.
    The exercise leader.
    Slumps, staleness and burnout.
    Psychology of injury.
    Substance abuse and eating disorders.
    Goal setting in sport.
    Arousal control.
    Imagery.
    Attentional strategies.
    Self-confidence.

    Evaluation criteria
    1 x 3-hour examination; 40% class mark + 60% examination mark.
