Syllabus
PURPOSE
To provide students with an introduction to the social issues surrounding sport in society. It will allow students to explore and question the dynamic relationship between sport, culture and society.LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will be able to:discuss socio-political-cultural issues and debates concerning sport;
develop critical insights into the sociological debates concerning sport in society;
use sociological concepts and theories in understanding sport as a social activity within a social context.CORE CONTENT
Introduction to the sociology of sport: what it is, and why we study it.
Using social theories in understanding sport in society.
Using history to help us understand sport today.
Sports and socialization.
The relationship between sport and gender, race and ethnicity, social class.
Sports and the economy, the media, politics.Evaluation criteria
