Syllabus
PURPOSE
To give students an in-depth understanding of oceanography with relevance to exploited species, fundamental aspects of fisheries science and applied strategies for sustainable utilization and management.LEARNING OUTCOMES
Learners must be able to:appreciate the complexity of interactions between the physical, chemical and biological environment in marine systems;
integrate population ecology into the principles of exploitation;
understand the principles of sustainability and how this can be achieved in fisheries;
appreciate the knowledge and governance constraints influencing fisheries.CORE CONTENT
Physical and chemical oceanography.
Marine biological productivity.
Effects of exploitation on populations.
Management approaches to fisheries.Evaluation criteria
