    Syllabus

    PURPOSE
    To give students an in-depth understanding of oceanography with relevance to exploited species, fundamental aspects of fisheries science and applied strategies for sustainable utilization and management.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES
    Learners must be able to:

    appreciate the complexity of interactions between the physical, chemical and biological environment in marine systems;
    integrate population ecology into the principles of exploitation;
    understand the principles of sustainability and how this can be achieved in fisheries;
    appreciate the knowledge and governance constraints influencing fisheries.

    CORE CONTENT
    Physical and chemical oceanography.
    Marine biological productivity.
    Effects of exploitation on populations.
    Management approaches to fisheries.

    Evaluation criteria
    50% class mark + 50% examination mark.

    External Examiner : Prof J Masters, University of Fort Hare.
