  • Overview

    Course Content:
    This module is intended to provide you with the skills required to produce films in the
    short documentary form. The process will focus upon the key roles in developing,
    shooting and editing such a project; Director, Researcher, Producer, Camera, Sound
    Recordist and Editor in order to prepare groups to develop an idea for a documentary
    which is imaginative and achievable. Particular attention will be paid to the apparently
    paradoxical notion of writing or scripting documentary films. The importance of ethics
    and the foundations of how we treat and work with our subjects will also be examined in
    some depth. Students will also be introduced to using archives through the process of
    making a video essay.
    Curriculum Content (Indicative):
    * Examining the short form documentary
    * Group work dynamics
    * Exploring notions of ethics in the documentary form
    * Examining subjectivity, objectivity and point of view.
    * The pitching process and pitching to peers
    * Selection and research of a subject/idea from a brief
    * Selection of interviewees, identifying locations, addressing rights and permissions
    * ?Writing? a short documentary script including story board
    * Planning filming sessions including consideration for technical issues
    * Filming interviews and supporting material
    * Working with archive sources
    * Completing post production
    * Plenary screening to the whole documentary group, receiving and working in a positive (and improving) way with peer criticism.
    Teaching:
    2 hour weekly sessions consisting of screenings, demonstrations and workshops on
    technical and production techniques
    Assessment:
    STUDY OPTION 1:
    * Practical coursework and production of a short documentary (30%)
    * Practical coursework and production of a short video (40%)
    * Practical coursework / portfolio presentation (30%)
    STUDY OPTION 2:
    * Part of Study option 1 assessment
