  • Overview

    Course Content:

    This module will enable creative music technology students to develop their skills in
    performance or composition supported by acquiring the necessary skills in research and
    academic writing to underpin university level studies.

    All students will be introduced to a range of contemporary issues in music and music
    technology. Through listening to and analysis of a wide range of musical styles, students
    will enhance their critical skills and musical vocabulary, whilst developing fundamental
    skills in academic writing and research.

    Topics covered include:
    ? Exploration of a range of techniques in composition and performance.
    ? Discussion of composition and performance in studio produced music.
    ? Development of effective performance techniques.
    ? Structural aspects of music in performance or composition.
    ? Issues of notation in composition and interpretation of music.
    ? Relationships between words and music.
    ? Working creatively with sound through rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic
    processes.
    ? Bibliographies and referencing.

    Those specialising in performance will receive 6 hours of specialist individual tuition on
    their instrument or voice in addition to lectures. Composers will receive small-group
    tuition. The assessment in this module is through a varied portfolio of work including
    creative work (performances and/or compositions) and written assignments.

    Folio of written work to include:
    ? CV (10%)
    ? Critical Review (15%)
    ? Essay (25%)
    Performers will also complete:
    ? A portfolio of practical work consisting of a performance exam including
    technical exercises (30%)
    ? Completion of a performers? diary (10%)
    ? Attendance at a staff-led performing ensemble (10%)
    Composers will also complete:
    ? A folio of technical exercises (20%)
    ? A summative free composition (30%)
    STUDY OPTION 2 OR STUDY OPTION 3: alternative assessment
