DESCRIPTION:
A selection of great thinkers who have influenced their times and whose ideas have contributed to the legacy of Western civilization.RATIONALE:
The purpose of this course is to offer students knowledge of intellectual history through readings of the original works of some great thinkers.LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Outline the ideas that have revolutionized human life and thought.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the role played by individual thinkers whose ideas have changed their and/or later times.
3. Examine in what way and to what extent these ideas influenced contemporary and/or later times.
4. Develop critical skills in using primary sources.
5. Achieve a deeper awareness of the human condition.METHOD OFTEACHING AND LEARNING:
In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Lectures and class discussions.
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their lecturer, where they can address issues and ask questions pertinent to the course material.
- Use of a blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, timely announcements, as well as additional resources.
- Use of library facilities: Students are encouraged to make use of the library facilities for further study as well as for preparation for the exams.
