  • Overview

    DESCRIPTION:
The course offers advanced individual instrumental/vocal instruction, further developing musical understanding, creativity and a range of technical and interpretive skills. In addition to weekly lessons, students gain valuable experience performing regularly at the Music Forum Performance Lab. The minimum standard of proficiency as reflected in repertoire selections is aligned to DipABRSM. This course prepares students for their final capstone recital, therefore it is understood that repertoire selections may also be included in the capstone recital. The performance of Concertos is optional but if performed they must be memorized, otherwise memorization is recommended for solo piano/vocal works written before 1900.

    RATIONALE:
This course is the fifth in a series of six courses which provide the instruction required for the development of instrumental/vocal performance abilities. This course builds and develops the recital repertoire for the capstone. Students further develop perception, reasoning and judgment involved in preparing and presenting a performance. This is an essential course to a music performance program.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successfully completing this course students should be able to:
    1. demonstrate the ability to prepare, interpret and present a substantial 30 minute performance of repertoire which show a range of technical skills, musical understanding, and stylistic awareness.
    2. assess and critically reflect on one’s own musical practice.
    3. select and summarize appropriate information in order to create recital programme notes.
    4. take part in the Music Forum activities and concert events, applying understanding of appropriate preparation, communication and performance etiquette skills.

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In accordance with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
    • Individual instruction focused on student needs
    • Frequent performance experience and feedback at weekly Music Forum Performance Lab
    • Reflective journal
    • Listening assignments
    • Attendance and participation in concerts, workshops, master classes, and other relevant Music events
    • Blackboard: a learning management system where announcements and additional resources are posted.
    • Office hours: students are encouraged to make use of the Music Forum instructor’s office hours, where they may ask questions, discuss the reflective statement and programme notes, and receive feedback on their progress.
