    DESCRIPTION:
Examination of personal and professional uses of, and perspectives on, CMC. Focus on online advertising techniques and the corporate and entrepreneurial uses of social media. Practice in the production of online applications that communicate and promote corporate brands.

    RATIONALE:
This course explores the personal and professional uses of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) in the context of its importance for communication practitioners in the areas of advertising, journalism, and public relations, and television production. Students acquire a systematic understanding of how CMC is used both for corporate advertising and entrepreneurial purposes. Given the importance of digital communication and the decline of traditional media, this module is a necessary part of an education that gives students a solid understanding of the communication field and a tool for seeking employment or selfemployment in a communication-related area.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
    1. Demonstrate understanding of the Internet’s social impact as a new channel of communication.
    2. Discuss the effects of CMC on society and the Internet’s social impact as a medium of communication.
    3. Analyse and develop online campaigns through the use of various social media applications.
    4. Understand the role of the communications specialist as a freelance designer of online-based projects.
    5. Assess the ethical and legal issues relevant to CMC.

    LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
    - Interactive Learning (class discussions, group work, creative sessions)
    - Office Hours: Students are encouraged to make full use of the office hours of their instructor, where they can ask questions and go over lecture material.
    - Use of a Blackboard site, where instructors post lecture notes, assignment instructions, timely announcements, as well as additional resources.
    - Blog Submissions: This module has an open source blog for the purposes of creating a real working case study in class.
