  • Overview

    DESCRIPTION: Overview of the field of psychology as a social science with emphasis on theoretical perspectives and research methods, lifespan development, mental abilities, personality theory and assessment, stress and coping, psychological disorders and treatment, social behaviour.

    RATIONALE: Fundamental introductory course for all psychology majors and those interested in psychology as a social science. Along with PS 1000 Psychology as a Natural Science, this course will serve as an overview of the psycho-social underpinnings of behavior and mental processes.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:

    1. Compare and contrast different theoretical perspectives in psychology as well as identify basic and applied areas in modern psychology.
    2. Describe the different scientific methods used in psychology as well as the ethical principles applied in research.
    3. Describe how the interplay of nature and nurture explains human diversity, with an emphasis on how the environment affects behaviour.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, major theories, empirical research and applications in developmental psychology, intelligence, and social psychology.
    5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts, major theories, empirical research and applications in personality, stress and health, abnormal behaviour and psychotherapy.

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING: In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the College, the following tools are used:
