  • Overview

This module will explore a range of historical and mythological writing from medieval Ireland, including tales from the so-called ?Mythological Cycle? of medieval Irish literature and the ?Kings? Cycle? or ?Historical Cycle? tales. Central to this module will be a consideration of the nature and function of supernatural elements in medieval Irish literature, particularly those characters portrayed as divine or semi-divine. Conceptions of kingship and sovereignty will also be a key theme. Medieval ideas about the distinction between ?history? and ?literature? will be considered, as well as the role of this literature within medieval Irish conceptions of Ireland?s pre-history. Some of the so-called ?pseudo-historical? writings surviving from medieval Ireland, such as the Lebor Gabála Érenn (?Book of the Taking of Ireland?), will be studied. The reception and use of this material in the modern era will be considered.
