Overview
To introduce sociological perspectives on social movements and collective action.
May include: The variety of forms of social movements and collective action, theories of movements and collective action, social movements and the state.Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-Detail and evaluate the major theories and key concepts used by sociologists to analyse social movements and collective action.
-Critically assess the contribution of sociological analysis to an understanding of the variety of forms of social movements and collective action, their social, political and cultural significance and their import for social change.
-Evaluate the empirical trends and patterns identified by sociologists exploring issues such as: tge development of social movements and nation states, recruitment, membership and leadership in social movements, the role of emotion and culture in movement mobilisation and the success and decline of social movements.
-Develop an independent and critical perspective on the sociological analysis of social movements and collective action.Teaching & Learning methods:
