Overview
This module examines the society of the Roman Republic through the literature of the period, from the early Roman theatre of the third century BC to the poetry and prose of the late Republic. Among the literature studied will be two comedies of the early playwright Plautus, the erotic poetry of Catullus, written about his mistress Lesbia, and a speech of Cicero defending his young friend Marcus Caelius on a charge of murder, in which the case is presented as a Roman comedy.
