    Founded in 1921, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is the largest private university in Europe and the largest catholic university in the world. On the Rome Campus, ISA students will be able to participate in the latest Global Health . With its focus on international students, ISA participants will have numerous opportunities to develop their academic and professional careers while closely experiencing the language and culture in one of the country's most powerful economic and cultural metropolises.

    This program specifically focuses on the following offerings:
    - Global Health and Epidemiology
    - Health Policy and Management for Universal Coverage

    The university is located in the north of Rome.

    Campus has sports facilities (with soccer field, volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts), and a gymnasium. The ISA office in Rome is located next to the American University of Rome's main campus. ISA students can visit the staff to talk about their cultural experiences, receive language tutoring, and get assistance with all aspects of daily life in Italy. Students who wish to travel during the program will also be able to get advice from the ISA staff.

    The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education. QS World University Rankings, a global university evaluation system, named UCSC as one of the top 200 universities in 10 fields of study. This is an improvement over UCSC's still impressive rankings in 2012, which demonstrates the university's growing prominence on a global scale. In 2013, QS awared the university five stars for its achievements in employability, teaching, facilities and engagement. In a survey sample of 65 European universities performed by the International Student Barometer, UCSC was declared second place and the fourth most recommended university by foreign students, demonstrating the university's expansive internationalization efforts. According to QS World University Rankings, the UCSC was decided in 2012 to be within the 450-500 best universities in the world, and was ranked 51-100 for Philosophy, 151-200 for agriculture and technologies, and 100-151 for Psychology.

Study Abroad Program Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to take health classes internationally!  The summer program options at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Rome Campus allow students with little or no experience in the Italian language to choose two paths focused on medicine:

  • Global Health and Epidemiology (Summer 3)
  • Health Policy and Management for Universal Coverage (Summer 4)

Back to back sessions of this program are available. You may select both sessions when submitting your online application and will receive a discount from the combined price of the sessions. For more information about this option, please contact your Italy Program Manager.

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.75.


There is no language prerequisite for this program.

  • You must have already completed two semesters of college by the program start date.

  • You must be at least 18 years old by the program start date.

  • Students with a cumulative GPA below 2.75 may be considered for acceptance. They must also submit one letter of recommendation and a statement of purpose.

Academic Information


  • You will take 1 course (3 credits) during this session. Most classes meet Monday - Friday.


  • Course hours of instruction are subject to change.
  • Eligibility for courses may be subject to a placement exam and/or prerequisites.


  • Requests for sample syllabi can be made to the Italy Program Manager.


  • ISA offers course level recommendations for the courses listed below. Please note that the course level recommendations are based on the host university course level recommendations and course codes and are only recommendations. Course numbers generally adhere to the following guidelines:
    • 100-199 Lower-level introductory courses with no prerequisites
    • 200-299 Lower-level courses with one or more prerequisites
    • 300-399 Upper-level courses with one or more prerequisites
    • 400-499 Upper-level advanced courses with two or more prerequisites and/or senior standing.
  • These ISA recommendations are intended to facilitate the determination of course equivalencies by advisers and credential evaluators at participants' U.S. home institutions.


  • Some courses may require additional fees which are to be paid directly to the host university. Field trip fees can vary greatly. Refer to the course description for applicable fees.


  • Upon program completion, you will receive a transcript issued directly from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. 


  • Credits earned vary according to the policies of your home institution.
  • Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university.

Funding Your ISA Program

Wondering how you’ll fund your program? ISA’s got you covered! If you receive financial aid for your home university, you will likely be able to use those funds for study abroad too.  The first step is usually speaking with your home university. Check out the steps for using financial aid here.

As an ISA participant, you have the opportunity to apply for scholarships and grants that can be applied directly to assist with your study abroad programs. ISA in Rome includes comfortable housing in shared, fully-furnished accommodations conveniently located in well-established neighborhoods in close proximity to the universities.  A $500 refundable security deposit will be charged to students living in ISA arranged housing. ISA may retain some, or all, of this deposit in the case of damage to property or if utility usage exceeds the allotted monthly amount.

We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations; however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.


For ISA programs at Universitá Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome Campus, students will stay in dorms. The dorm is located just off-campus, giving students a short walk to class. Each dorm room is double-occupancy and has its own bathroom. The dorm has a cafeteria where students can order food for an additional cost. Wifi is provided throughout the dorm building. There are no laundry facilities in the building, but a laundromat is nearby.

You may elect to secure housing independently. If you select this option, you will receive a discount equal to the housing portion of the program price.

Excursions are not included in this session, however, while you are abroad, you will have the opportunity to take part in cultural activities offered by the ISA resident staff.

Cultural Activities in Rome

The ISA on-site team encourages you to explore the city and culture of Rome. The team facilitates this by offering a robust calendar of events that showcases what makes Rome special.

These activities vary each term, and previous offerings have included cooking lessons, guided tours of the Capitoline Museums, a visit to a gelato factory, guided tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill, and a walking tour of the famous fountains in the city.
