  • Overview

The concept of ?place? is increasingly used within sociology to refer to the settings where people live out their
lives as they engage in a whole host of activities. Some places appear mundane and ordinary, holding little
regard to the individual when undertaking their day-to-day activities. By contrast other places possess great
meaning, either at an individual, group or national level: the home, a church or mosque, football ground and
memorial site provide illustrations of each. So all aspects of people?s lives are ?emplaced?, but to widely
differing degrees. Places can be ?real?, but also ?imagined?, and there can often be an interplay between both
    conceptions.
The aim of this module is to systematically examine and better understand the importance of place within
contemporary society, an exarcise that will also consider its close association with notions of both belonging
and identity. This will involve gaining a working knowledge of critical theoretical perspectives on place, and
also exposure to a range of analytical tools to better understand its role and importance within the
sociological imagination. Throughout this module emphasis will be placed on reflection as a means to better
understand the social processes that are often ?hidden? within contemporary society.
