Overview
The module begins by showing how rapid urbanisation in Britain in the 19th century led to serious publichealth problems, and eventually to the ?invention? of planning and city management through localgovernment. It then presents five competing ?visions? of the city, which have at times been influential andhave helped shape our cityscapes. They are the city in the garden, the city of towers, the self-built city, thecity of enterprise and the decentralised city. We then examine the impact of globalisation on cities: growinginequality within and between cities; and the need to market cities as places. The discussion of inequalityleads into a more detailed study of urban marginality, with case studies of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Weconsider the likely impact of the independence referendum on urban Scotland. Finally, we ask what it takes tomake cities sustainable and good places to live.
