  • Overview

    Justification
    This course develops the specific competence "CE-RI-03- Understanding the fundamentals of science, technology, material chemistry and the relationship between microstructure, synthesis or processing and the properties of materials", included in Order CIN/351/2009, of 9 February, which establishes the requirements for the verification of official university degrees that qualify for the exercise of the profession of Technical Industrial Engineer.

    The professionals of this branch can carry out projects related to:

    -  The determination of mechanical properties of materials.

    -  The analysis and study of metallic, ceramic and polymeric materials and their applications in different products.

    -  The study of manufacturing processes as a function of the materials used.

    For this reason, this course studies the mechanical properties of materials, the different families of materials and their industrial application. In this way, they have the ability to know the different materials and the ideal manufacturing method for product design. In such a way, that they understand the existing relationships between the material's structures, properties and processing, which determines its behaviour and applications. The aim is to lay the foundations of knowledge in the area of materials and their manufacture, so that the student acquires criteria applied to industry.

    In addition, according to the generic skill map of the degree, this subject contributes to the integral formation of the engineer developing part of the skill "ORAL COMMUNICATION".


    Subject competencies
    The learning outcomes in terms of subject-specific competences are:

    CE1: To identify the types of materials to analyze their industrial applicability according to their properties and internal structures.

    CE2: To establish criteria for processing the basic raw materials used in industry, identifying the productive resources necessary for the manufacture of industrial parts.

    In addition, according to the map of generic competences of the title, in this subject the following one is developed:

    CG02: ORAL COMMUNICATION.

    To express with clarity and opportunity the ideas, knowledge and feelings by the use of words, adapting to the characteristics of the situation and the audience to achieve understanding.

    Mastery Level 1: To express one's own ideas in a structured and intelligible way, intervening with relevance and opportunity in exchange situations, as well as in more formal and structured ones.


    Course content
    UNIT 1. STRUCTURE OF THE MATERIALS.

    Introduction to materials science and engineering. Classification of materials. Structure of the solid state. Phase diagrams. Solidification and crystal imperfections. Diffusion.

    UNIT 2. PROPERTIES AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS.

    Mechanical properties. Electrical, magnetic and thermal properties. Characterization tests.

    UNIT 3. TYPES OF MATERIALS.

    Metals. Ceramics. Polymers. Composite materials. Recycling of materials.

    UNIT 4. THERMAL TREATMENTS OF METALS.

    Fundamentals. Transformation points. S-curve. Annealed. Hardening. Normalized. Isothermal treatments. Surface treatments. Coatings.

    UNIT 5. METAL MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES.

    Powder metallurgy. Deformation processes: rolling, drawing, drawing, extrusion, tubular products.

    UNIT 6. POLYMER AND CERAMIC PROCESSING.

    Polymer transformation processes. Manufacture of ceramic materials. Processing of composites.


    EVALUATION

    The competencies worked will be evaluated through a process of continuous assessment throughout the four-month period, articulating this evaluation around two specific competences and a generic one to be developed by students:

    CG02 (10 % of the final grade)

    It will be evaluated based on the oral presentation of the work of the subject.

    CE1 (50 % of final grade)

    Evaluation exams during the school year (35 %)

    Laboratory practices (10 %)

    Test (5%)

    CE2 (45 % of final grade)

    Evaluation exams at the end of the school year (35 %)

    Test (5%)

    In order to apply for both the ordinary and extraordinary exams, and therefore to pass the course, it is essential to have carried out the laboratory work and the final work of the course.

    Ordinary call:

    In order to pass the course in the ordinary convocation it is necessary:

          1. To have carried out the laboratory practices.

          2. To obtain a minimum of 5 in the individual grade in each evaluation test.

          3. To obtain a minimum of 5 in the grade of each competence.

          4. To obtain a minimum of 5 in the overall average grade of the subject.
