Survey of Spanish Literature (FALL ONLY)

DESCRIPTION AND GOALS
The main goals of the course are to provide students with knowledge about the different periods in Spanish Literature from its beginning, with a special emphasis on Golden Age (16th and 17th centuries) movements and trends, and to help them explore the cultural, social, and literary values shown on the selection of representative works from those periods. Furthermore, the literary texts will offer students the chance to develop their reading and discussion techniques, and will also be the basis of the written papers to be assigned by the instructor, who will offer guidance on these assignments.

METHODOLOGY
It will be based on the instructor?s theoretical explanations on the features of different literary genres and on the selected authors and texts. It will also focus on the comment and discussion of these explanations by students. Therefore, students will need to read and prepare the texts to be commented in class beforehand at home.
Besides, they will need to write 4 two three-page essays on topics suggested by the instructor, which will relate to texts of the different literary periods.


ASSESSMENT
Students' grades will be calculated according to the following breakdown:
- Participation: 10%
- Class assignments: 10%
- Written assignments: 40%
- Final exam: 40%
Note: Specific requirements for graduate credit will be assigned at the beginning of the course.
