    · Knowledge of the main theories about the formation of social identities, with special attention to national, ethnic and supranational identities.
    · Knowledge of the main theories of ethnic conflict, racism and xenophobia, and socio-economic determinants of attitudes towards immigration.
    · Knowledge about changing values in the contemporary world, with special attention to the processes of secularization, the emergence of post-materialist values, and the decline of class identities.


    Origin and evolution of national, ethnic and supranational identities. Social and economic determinants of attitudes towards immigration. Process of changing cultural values: theory and evidence. Ethno-territorial conflicts in the contemporary world and the debate on the clash of cultures. The cultural dimension of regional integration processes: the case of the European Union. The study of culture as an explanatory variable: methodological and conceptual challenges.

    - 40% Continuous work (assingments, labs, practicals, etc.)
    - 60% End-of-term exam

Eligibility for courses may be subject to a placement exam and/or pre-requisites.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.

ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.

Please reference fall and spring course lists as not all courses are taught during both semesters.
