  • Overview

    COURSE OBJECTIVE
    The main aim of this course is to introduce students to social ontology. The students will be able to understand the philosophical and scientific controversies regarding social objects (e.g. groups of individuals, universities) and the analysis thereof. The students will be able to engage in constructive and critical discussions on these topics.

    COURSE CONTENT
    The course covers ontological questions (e.g. what is the university?) and methodological questions (e.g. can or should we analyze a group in terms of its individuals?). The course focuses on recent work within analytical philosophy. Main topics include the social sciences, naturalism/interpretation, (collective) intentionality, rational choice theory, group agency, social institutions, race, and gender.

    TEACHING METHODS
    Interactive lectures and close reading seminars.

    TYPE OF ASSESSMENT
    Group presentations in class (20%), Two written assignments (40% each)

    RECOMMENDED BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE
    Familiarity with general analytic philosophy.
